Mathematics teaches us that every problem has a solution. Math is all around us in our everyday lives. Shapes, sizes, the number of skittles we have in our candy bag. It is very important we understand how math is used in order to prepare us in situations where we will use it. Even then, some people seem math isn’t for them. I hope to be sure everyone feels confident and strong in their learning and help provide the best support to each and every student I have.

As an educator, a goal of mine is to ensure that my students feel safe and comfortable in their learning environment. I will be sure to always be outside at the door ready to greet the students with a smile and of a welcome greeting of their choice (e.g. high-five, fist-bump). The classroom will have 3R’s: Respect the teacher, Respect each other, and Respect the building and supplies. I will also engage and build relationships with my students throughout teaching and as they learn. Scaffolding and positive feedback will help my students feel more safe within the classroom and feel more comfortable opening up. Students will understand they are in a safe place, with people that are going to be respectful of them, and in return they will be respectful themselves. This helps them feel appreciated, accepted, and important as a student and a learner, and show that I truly want them to succeed.

Understanding how to incorporate different learning styles will also benefit each and every student who might learn best differently. As a mathematics teacher, I will find ways to include visuals, videos, texts, and virtual/in-person manipulatives to reach every learner. This will also be another way to show my students I care about their learning styles and interests. Creating songs, or even abbreviations with different words helps with memorization. For example, PEMDAS for the order of operations. Seeing how things are added, subtracted, multiplied, or divided through a video can help show step-by-step how to do so. Visuals are an excellent way to show connections or even a specific concept. And manipulatives, such as base 10 blocks for finding the parts of a whole, or even describing decimals, are a great way to visually demonstrate and be engaged in learning.
